The Youth Catalyst Portfolio is UNDP Tanzania’s flagship portfolio for advancing youth empowerment, innovation, and entrepreneurship, anchored by the FUNGUO Innovation Programme. In 2026, the Portfolio is transitioning from a phase of intensive implementation toward sustainability, scaling, and deeper policy influence. This shift requires strong, consistent, and evidence-based communications to demonstrate results, elevate youth voices, and position UNDP as a trusted convener and innovation partner.

The Communications Intern will support strategic communications, storytelling, and digital engagement across the Portfolio. This internship also offers a learning opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain practical experience in development and communications within a dynamic, multi-disciplinary UN environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Communications, Outreach and Advocacy Analyst (Lead) the intern will:

  • Support implementation of the Youth Catalyst Portfolio and FUNGUO communications and visibility plan.
  • Draft and edit content for social media, newsletters, website updates, and the WhatsApp Channel.
  • Support documentation of success stories, case studies, and investee spotlights.
  • Assist with communications planning and coverage for events such as Innovation Week Tanzania, Youth Ignite activities, and policy dialogues.
  • Support monitoring of communications metrics and preparation of basic analytics reports.
  • Maintain organized archives of communications products and media coverage.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the supervisor that contribute to the goals of the organization.

Expected Outputs

  • Regular digital content produced and published in line with the communications plan.
  • At least 10 documented success stories or case studies.
  • Monthly communications performance summaries.
  • Communications support provided to major portfolio events.

  • Gain hands-on experience in development communications, digital storytelling, advocacy, and application of UNDP branding and visibility standards

Required Education, Skills and Language

Education:

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one year of graduation;
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.

Major in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, International Relations, international development, Law, Business Administration, or any other related field.

Skills:

  • Ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Interest in international development and alignment with UNDP’s mission
  • Adaptability, willingness to learn, and ability to take on challenges.
  • Attention to detail, creativity, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Respect for UN values and the UNDP Statement of Purpose
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Language:

Proficiency in English. Working knowledge of other UN language desirable

INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS

Interns may be given a stipend according to the UNDP Internship Policies, if is not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation or scholarship programme.

Interns, whether engaged in-person or remotely, are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of their internship with UNDP and must provide self-certification of good health prior to starting the internship. Any cost arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern.

Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed; Cost and arrangement for travel, visas, passports, accommodations and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern.

Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
