Role Purpose
The key purpose of this role is to drive high-performance irrigated barley production in the Southern Region by providing advanced technical support to commercial farmers and ensuring optimal yield, quality, and efficiency at farm level in line with company standards.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Provide expert technical support to commercial barley farmers, with a strong focus on irrigated production systems
- Guide irrigation scheduling practices to optimize water use efficiency and crop performance
- Support farmers in implementing best practices in fertilization, crop protection, planting density, and yield optimization
- Monitor crop performance throughout the season and provide timely, practical recommendations to address challenges and improve productivity
- Identify yield gaps and production constraints and implement corrective actions at farm level
- Ensure adherence to company standards on seed usage, input application, and crop quality requirements
- Drive adoption of modern agronomic technologies and precision farming practices among commercial farmers
- Support accurate production planning through field-level insights on acreage, crop condition, and yield projections
- Identify and manage production risks including irrigation challenges, climate variability, pests, and diseases
- Support implementation of sustainability and good agricultural practices at farm level
- Build strong working relationships with commercial farmers and irrigation scheme stakeholders
- Maintain accurate field data and records on crop performance, input usage, and farmer activities
- Prepare and submit timely reports on crop progress, risks, and production forecasts
- Provide practical training and technical guidance to farmers to improve productivity and consistency
Key Attributes and Competencies
- Strong technical expertise in barley agronomy, particularly under irrigation systems
- Advanced knowledge of irrigation scheduling, soil-water-plant relationships, and water management practices
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose field issues and implement practical solutions
- Ability to translate technical knowledge into actionable guidance for farmers
- Strong planning and organizational skills with attention to detail
- High level of accountability and results-driven mindset
- Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions in field environments
- Strong communication and farmer engagement skills
- Digital literacy and ability to utilize agricultural data and reporting tools
- Collaborative team player
- Fluency in English
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Agronomy or related field
- Minimum 4–6 years’ experience in agronomy, with strong exposure to cereal crops and irrigated systems
- Proven experience working with commercial farmers
- Demonstrated expertise in irrigation management and crop production under irrigation
- Experience in providing technical advisory services and managing field-level agronomic operations
- Valid driver’s license
- Willingness to travel extensively within production areas
