The U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam is seeking qualified internal candidates to fill two Chauffeur positions within the Marine Security Guards (MSG) section. This permanent, full-time role is responsible for safely transporting U.S. Government personnel, visitors, and cargo while ensuring high standards of professionalism, security, and customer service during all official transportation assignments.
The successful candidates will operate government vehicles for official travel within Dar es Salaam and throughout Tanzania, maintain assigned vehicles in good working condition, deliver official documents, and complete transportation records accurately. The role also requires adherence to U.S. Mission safety procedures, local traffic regulations, and vehicle maintenance standards.
Responsibilities or duties
- Safely operate U.S. Government vehicles to transport passengers and cargo
- Drive personnel within Dar es Salaam and on official trips throughout Tanzania
- Assist passengers with luggage and other transported materials
- Deliver official documents, invitations, and correspondence within the city
- Provide courteous, professional, and reliable transportation services
- Serve as a backup truck driver when required
- Ensure the safe loading, unloading, and transportation of cargo
- Maintain the security of transported supplies and equipment
- Inspect, clean, and maintain assigned vehicles before, during, and after each trip
- Monitor fuel, oil, and coolant levels to ensure vehicles remain operational
- Report vehicle defects and maintenance requirements to dispatchers
- Deliver vehicles for scheduled preventive maintenance
- Record daily trip details, vehicle inspections, and fuel purchases using ILMS/FMIS
- Complete daily vehicle inspection logs accurately
- Immediately report accidents to the Dispatcher and designated American officer
- Prepare accident reports promptly when required
- Perform additional duties assigned by the agency
Qualifications or requirements
- Completion of Primary School
- Minimum of three (3) years of passenger driving experience with a private company or government institution
- Good working knowledge (Level III) of both English and Kiswahili (speaking, reading, and writing)
- Thorough knowledge of Dar es Salaam roads, streets, traffic patterns, and local traffic laws
- Basic knowledge of vehicle mechanics
- Valid Tanzanian driving licence with Classes B, C, D, and E
- Clean driving record with no accidents during the past three years
- Basic computer skills
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- High level of professionalism, responsibility, and integrity
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow security procedures
