Kikonyo Nursery Team Leader will be responsible for overseeing all Planting, Growing, Dispatch and transplanting of the high-quality output speeding.

The Kikonyo nursery team leaders are responsible for overseeing all production aspects in a particular phase of the speedlings production, that are: Germination team leader, Growing team leader, and Dispatch & transplanting team leader. This role ensures the production of high-quality planting material, adherence to best agronomic practices, and the successful distribution of healthy sugarcane seedlings to the company fields by adopting and improving efficient team management skills.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Trays and crates cleaning using water pressure machine
  • Receive the substrates from factory – Bagasse and filter mud - and rice husks from local rice machines
  • Sieve the Bagasse and filter mud
  • Carbonize the rice husks
  • Store the prepared single substrates before mixing
  • Mix the substrates in the precise ratio
  • Store mixed substrate
  • Fill the trays with mixed substrate
  • Receive seed cane from the field
  • Distribute seed cane in the bud cutting machines
  • Run the bud cutting machines
  • Collect the cut stalks in the bud cutting machines area, and place it in the conveyor in the trailer to the mill
  • Collect the cut buds at the machines station
  • Treat cut buds with hormone and fungicide (in the solution container, red)
  • Mix treated cut buds with substrate
  • Print the labels to identify the sprouting crates
  • Place the printed labels in the crates
  • Place the cut buds + substrates in the crates
  • Move and place the crates in the sprouting chamber
  • Monitor the kikonyo development inside of sprouting chamber
  • Move the sprouted crates to the planting table
  • Off load the sprouted crates on the planting table
  • Select the sprouted and rooted speedlings for planting
  • Plant the sprouted buds in the filled trays
  • Place the planted trays in the tug trailer
  • Off load the trays inside the greenhouse
  • Label the place regarding the daily production inside the greenhouse
  • Greenhouse management i.e.: temperature monitoring, air moisture monitoring, diseases monitoring, greenhouse cleanness, shade-net daily schedule (pre-hardening management), plastic daily inspection.
  • Ready speedlings loading into the trailer
  • Ready speedlings movement to the hardening area
  • Tug trailer offloading to the hardening area
  • Trays placing on the benches
  • Hardening area management (irrigation and nutrition monitoring, mortality removal, pests and diseases monitoring, agrichemicals application (insecticide/fungicide), weeds manual control, trays consolidation (filling the gaps and sorting), ground weeds controlling, tug trailer loading to the dispatch area, tug trailer offloading in the dispatch area
  • Dispatch management (pre-transplanting land prep quality control, crates offloading from the field, crates stacking, crates movement to the dispatch area from the cleaning station, speedlings placement in the crates, speedlings watering before dispatch, loading crates with seedlings for planting in the field, speedlings offloading in the field, distribution of seedlings in the field, planting quality control.
  • Other activities not listed here that promotes a healthy and good quality speedlings development (in nursery and field environment)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ordinary Secondary Education desirably
  • Minimum 1 year experience in sugarcane or seed cane propagation
  • Experience in managing pests and diseases in sugarcane crops
  • Knowledge of sugarcane propagation techniques and agronomic practices
  • Good knowledge of sugarcane cultivation requirements and nursery operations

Terms of Service: The successful candidate will be engaged on a fixed term contract.
