Job Purpose:
To ensure the stability of underground excavations and open pit slopes through geotechnical data collection, analysis, monitoring, and design of ground support systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct geotechnical mapping, core logging (RMR, Q-system, GSI), and structural analysis of discontinuities.
- Design and monitor ground support (rock bolts, shotcrete, mesh, cable bolts) for stopes, drifts, and pillars.
- Install and interpret geotechnical instrumentation (extensometers, stress cells, piezometers, prism monitoring).
- Perform slope stability analysis for pit walls using software (RocScience, SLIDE, FLAC, or UDEC).
- Investigate and report on ground falls, dilution, and seismic events.
- Update ground control management plans and support standards.
- Train miners and supervisors in geotechnical hazard recognition.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Engineering Geology.
- Master’s degree in Rock Mechanics strongly preferred.
- Professional registration (P.Eng., P.Geo., or CEng).
Experience:
- 8+ years in operational rock mechanics (underground hard rock or open pit).
- Experience with numerical modeling and seismicity monitoring in deep mines.
Competencies:
- Proficiency in mapping and stereonet analysis (Dips, Unwedge).
- Practical knowledge of shotcrete and bolt testing (pull tests).
- Ability to work under time pressure in active mining areas.
