Job Purpose

The successful candidate will lead and guide a team of functionally mapped safety specialists to enhance safety capability, compliance, behaviors and culture through embedding safe work practices at all levels. Partnering with and providing safety leadership to Functional Heads and providing strong, integrated analytical insights that enable a safe place of work as well as influencing a strong governance and control framework that meets stakeholder expectations and drive safety accountability at all levels.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the development of medium and long term Safety strategies in country by providing input into key decisions and reports to ensure company strategy and Safety values are considered in all business initiatives
  • Embed best practices, minimum standards, policies, processes, tools, technology & enablers through capability development strategy
  • Ensure Safety best practices and minimum standards/ processes are aligned with company, regulatory and legal requirements, are easily accessible and regularly updated on the Country, IIRMS platform and oversee compliance to such standards to meet the BU’s strategic plan
  • Maintain external certification systems for Health & Safety (including insurance audits) & improve audit scores where required, through inspections & internal audit processes
  • Co-ordinate and conduct risk assessments to support the BU’s Risk Management process
  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations. Design, support implementation, and management of control measures to mitigate occupational health risks
  • Ensure contractor compliance to all applicable HSE regulatory and BU requirements
  • Develop and test the Emergency Response Management system in accordance with the Company and Insurer’s requirements
  • Follow up on close out of findings from ABF HSE Assurance processes (incl EY & ERM audits)
  • Promote a Safety culture driven by individual and peer to peer accountability towards functional excellence in support of a productive and “safe” environment
  • Reduce the number of Health & Safety incidents through implementation of preventative / corrective measures for all reported near misses
  • Investigate incidents, accidents and near misses making use of the relevant investigation tool which will be determined according to the severity of the matter
  • Proactively engage with authorities and affected communities to influence and ensure that Health & Safety licenses to operate are maintained
  • Build local capability in Health & Safety and ensure training programmes, materials and plans are in place
  • Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders incl. statutory bodies, Centre and all country functions
  • Manage the incident management system to report, investigate, track close out of actions and verify embedment of implemented actions.
  • Identify and drive implementation of effective fit for purpose Safety communication systems
  • Oversee effective talent and performance management within function
  • Ensure that the agreed Health & Safety targets and agreed KPIs are reviewed daily and report these monthly.
  • Support the ABF annual HSE reporting process, compile, co-ordinate and submit the reports as required
  • Promote and adhere to BU and Group procedures, policies and guidelines, including, without limitation, those relating to HSE, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC)

Job Qualification and Experience

  • Relevant Degree in Business Management /Safety/ Risk Management or Reliability Engineering disciplines
  • 5-7 years management experience in a Manufacturing/Construction/Mining environment
  • SAMTRAC or NEBOSH qualification, or ISO 14000, 45000 or ISO 22000 auditor qualification
  • Ability to engage and influence at all levels
  • Expertise in HSE Systems

Terms Of Service

The successful candidate will be engaged on a Permanent Contract.
