Job Purpose
The Harvest Team Leader will be the custodian of excellent crop harvesting practices for farm by Ensuring best possible crop removal performance by driving the highest standards of cane harvesting in line with factory requirements at optimal cost as well as Supervising harvest teams in line with annual harvest plan.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Where harvesting activities are outsourced:

  • Coordinate and monitor cane burning and cane cutting teams on multiple fronts
  • Inspect the standard of cane cutting to in compliance with cane quality practices
  • Promote and adhere to Illovo SHERQ procedures, policy and guidelines
  • Manage cane fire and security risks associated with

Where harvesting activities are insourced:

  • Manage cane harvesting activities, timing and quality standards
  • Manage teams’ productivity and driving continues improvement
  • Deploy cane burning and/or cutting teams in line with the annual harvest plan
  • Inspect the standards of cutting in compliance with cane quality practices
  • Manage and coordinate cane burning crew to ensure safety of the team and effective practices
  • Manage daily BTWD to specified standards for specific area of responsibility
  • Implement and monitor continuous improvement practices by driving work practices, and ensuring that tools and techniques are applied to deliver highest quality cane, sustainable cane supply of estate sugar cane to the mills
  • Oversee effective performance management, developing skills within teams through on-the-job coaching and training
  • Conduct on the job training and instruction for cane burning and cutting activities to teams, and identify new training needs where appropriate or required
  • Identify and monitor KPIs and balanced scorecards, track performance and flag any issues
  • Manage cane fire and security risks associated with
  • Promote and adhere to Illovo’s procedures, policies and guidelines, including, without limitation, those relating to SHERQ, Competition Law and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Diploma or Degree in Agriculture or related
  • 5+ years experience in sugar cane agriculture preferably in cane harvesting
  • Experience leading teams
  • Contracts management experience an advantage
  • Data management skills and firm command of office based software eg excel
  • Good relationship / team leadership skills
  • Good knowledge of fire safety
  • Crowd management skills

Terms of Service: The successful candidate will be engaged on a permanent contract.
