Job Purpose:

To operate a specific make of drill rig (Sandvik) safely and productively for production drilling (blasthole) in a mining environment, achieving penetration rates and accuracy targets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate a Sandvik drill rig (e.g., Pantera, DPi) to drill blastholes to precise design specifications (depth, angle, spacing).
  • Perform advanced pre-start checks and basic troubleshooting of the rig's hydraulic, pneumatic, and control systems.
  • Use onboard computer systems (RCS, iDrill) for monitoring performance and diagnostics.
  • Maintain high standards of drill floor housekeeping.
  • Change drill rods, bits, and hammers efficiently.
  • Complete drill log sheets and report any mechanical issues or unusual ground conditions immediately.
  • Work closely with the Drill & Blast team to optimize patterns and performance.
  • Follow all isolation and safety procedures for working on heavy machinery.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Proven experience operating Sandvik drill rigs in a production mining environment.
  • Specific training/certification on Sandvik equipment is a major advantage.
  • Valid operator's license/certificate for drill rigs.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in mining or heavy civil construction.
  • Proven track record of working in remote site locations.
  • Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Relevant trade certification, vocational training, or operator licenses.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in challenging outdoor environments.
  • Fluency in Kiswahili; working knowledge of English is an advantage.
