Job Purpose

The Regional Agronomist will play a key role in supporting farmers to enhance extension services and adopt improved production techniques that increase crop yields. The role involves providing practical solutions to crop production challenges, conducting research, and promoting climate-smart agricultural strategies to address the effects of climate change on soils, pests, and diseases. Additionally, the Regional Agronomist will actively contribute to product marketing and the promotion of sustainable farming practices.

Scope of Work

Production

  • Mobilize farmers into formal groups/associations and register them with TAHA.
  • Establish crop clusters for Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) training, agro-dealers, and market linkages.
  • Set up demonstrations on farming practices, improved production technologies, harvesting, and post-harvest techniques.
  • Establish and manage farmers’ collection and distribution centers to ensure they operate commercially and sustainably.
  • Introduce innovative horticultural practices to empower farmers with technical skills and capabilities through business-oriented extension services.
  • Prepare and coordinate technical training programs, farmer field days, workshops, exchange visits, and other farmer networking events.
  • Identify relevant new methods and develop training materials and technologies for irrigation, harvesting, processing, storage, cooling, and transporting horticulture products to the market.
  • Conduct periodic surveys to identify production, harvesting, and transportation constraints and develop mechanisms to address them.
  • Organize Farmer Field Days for farmers to share production practices and experiences.
  • Maintain solid relations between TAHA, Local Government Authorities (LGAs), and other ground partners in the respective areas.
  • Coordinate the entire value chain (quality seedling availability, agro-inputs, packaging material, buyers, post-harvest facilities, etc.) in collaboration with other actors along the value chain.

Market Access

  • Identify market opportunities at local, regional, and international levels.
  • Develop and implement strategies for sustainable market linkages at local, regional, and international markets.
  • Understand key market and production requirements to align demand and supply for efficient market linkage processes.
  • Create market opportunities and provide a range of marketing options for small-scale producers.
  • Conduct assessments of farmers and SMEs to identify business capacity gaps and propose economic and sustainable methods to address them.
  • Coordinate market/business interactive sessions between farmers, traders, and other relevant actors for market linkages, networking, and learning purposes.
  • Work with other TAHA departments to identify marketing challenges and opportunities and advise on the best ways to address them.
  • Identify and engage relevant potential horticultural actors/partners within the area and advise on the best way of working/partnering with them.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders involved in collection centers and other TAHA departments (Business Environment, Finance) to facilitate the development and implementation of collection center business models for operationalization.

Partnerships

  • Identify and coordinate ground partners to ensure resources are aligned for bigger and tangible results and impact.

Reports Development

  • Ensure quality reports are prepared timely and submitted to relevant parties in close collaboration with the Programs and M&E Departments.

TAHA Representation

  • Represent TAHA and the industry in events related to production, technology, and innovation.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Skills

Degree Level

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agriculture General, Applied Agricultural Extension, or Crop Production and Management.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in agricultural development, with a focus on horticulture and crop production.
  • Proficiency in modern agricultural techniques, including Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), irrigation, harvesting, and post-harvest management.
  • Strong understanding of horticultural practices, including knowledge of innovative and sustainable methods.
  • Experience in establishing and managing farmers’ groups, collection, and distribution centers.
  • Familiarity with market analysis, linkages, and marketing strategies for agricultural products.

Key Skills

  • High level of leadership, interpersonal, technical, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with a broad range of public and private sector counterparts and other key stakeholders.
