Job summary
Don Bosco Technical Training College (DBTTC), in strategic collaboration with leading plumbing industry partners, is implementing a two-year employer-led Dual Apprenticeship Programme in Plumbing & Pipe Fitting. The primary objective of Don Bosco is to provide technical, moral, and total human value formation education to young men and women, equipping them to become productive and honourable citizens.
The Plumbing Trainer plays a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of skilled plumbing professionals. This role bridges classroom theory with practical workshop and workplace training, ensuring apprentices develop the competencies required by the modern plumbing industry. Experienced plumbing and pipe fitting professionals seeking to transition into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) instruction will receive comprehensive pedagogy training to equip them with advanced teaching, instruction, assessment, and mentorship skills.
DBTTC is seeking skilled and experienced plumbing professionals who are passionate about teaching and mentorship. This is a full-time position, and successful candidates will receive comprehensive pedagogy training and ongoing professional development to enable them to deliver high-quality, competency-based, hands-on training.
As a Plumbing Teacher, you will play a critical role in developing skilled artisans for the plumbing sector, guiding apprentices through both classroom learning and workplace application while contributing to the advancement of the plumbing profession and the future of the industry.
Key responsibilities & duties
- Conduct high-quality plumbing training across both classroom and workshop settings using real-world scenarios, simulations, visual aids, and modern educational technology.
- Design comprehensive learning assignments spanning the full two-year plumbing curriculum.
- Ensure that all long and short courses in Plumbing comply strictly with approved NACTVET curriculum standards.
- Enforce and follow the teaching section schedule as prepared by the College Training Coordinator (TC).
- Collaborate continuously with industry experts to update and align training content with current industry practices.
- Liaise with partner plumbing companies and coordinate directly with company mentors to maintain updated apprentice logbooks.
- Supervise apprentices’ practical work and industry projects, providing constructive feedback to foster practical skill acquisition.
- Prepare, administer, and grade formative assessments, Continuous Assessment (CA), and final examinations covering classroom and workshop components.
- Ensure all examination documents receive required pre-approval prior to administration.
- Submit all Continuous Assessment (CA) records to the Training Coordinator (TC) prior to semester examinations.
- Prepare comprehensive semester progress and assessment reports for each apprentice.
- Collaborate with the Training Coordinator, NACTVET /VETA to ensure all assessment procedures comply with national standards.
- Participate actively in monthly Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) meetings within the Civil Engineering Department to maintain quality assurance.
- Provide moral formation, career guidance, and holistic mentorship to apprentices in alignment with institutional values.
- Enforce student discipline, safety protocols, and industry regulations in both workshop and classroom environments.
Workshop management, tools & safety
- Check and verify personal protective equipment (PPE) for all apprentices before practical sessions.
- Maintain cleanliness, order, and waste separation practices in workshop facilities.
- Serve as custodian for training materials by raising timely material requisitions for practical sessions.
- Manage tools, equipment, and machine inventories within the Plumbing Pipe Fitting section in collaboration with the Finance Office.
- Support budget preparation and resource management for school and workshop operations.
- Maintain accurate administrative records, including lesson plans, schemes of work, timetables, and student documentation.
- Participate in college events and perform additional duties as assigned by the Lead Trainer or School Principal.
Required qualifications, experience & competencies
- Minimum of a Diploma in Building and Civil Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- A recognized Certificate in Teaching Methodology in Technical Education is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 5 years of proven, hands-on industry experience in plumbing installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse plumbing systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings.
- Prior experience working within a dual training setting or apprenticeship scheme is an added advantage.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication and presentation skills.
- Proficiency in utilizing instructional visual aids and educational technology.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to instruct and mentor students from diverse cultural, educational, and religious backgrounds.
- High degree of initiative, flexibility, team spirit, and self-motivation.
- Proven ability to multitask, manage workload efficiently, and meet strict deadlines with minimal supervision.
Remuneration, terms & working conditions
- Two-year renewable contract based on performance and institutional requirements.
