Job summary

The Loan Officer will be responsible for underwriting, originating, closing and monitoring MoneyMax’s loan portfolio.

MoneyMax is a development financial institution serving citizens and community members in Arusha, Tanzania. The Loan Officer will work toward meeting loan production goals, complying with lending and portfolio management policies, and minimizing legal and financial risks to the organization. The position works closely with the Loan Officer Supervisor, Financial Services Consultant, Loan Committee, and external lenders or service providers to support MoneyMax’s mission, operations and growth potential.

  • Be permanently settled in Arusha.
  • Provide two referees who have permanent addresses in Arusha.
  • Complete the required referee form.

Essential job functions

The Loan Officer will:

  • Respond to loan and technical assistance inquiries promptly, respectfully and professionally.
  • Maintain ongoing client relationships and communicate with clients regarding loans, technical assistance and other products or services.
  • Conduct due diligence and detailed financial analyses of financing requests.
  • Prepare credit memoranda and recommendations in accordance with established loan policies and programme guidelines.
  • Coordinate and conduct loan closings promptly, including:
  • Negotiating loan terms.
  • Preparing commitment letters.
  • Reviewing due diligence requirements.
  • Ordering and reviewing loan documents.
  • Coordinating loan disbursements.
  • Maintain credit quality by:
  • Monitoring borrowers’ compliance with loan covenants and repayment obligations.
  • Analysing financial statements and other borrower reports.
  • Conducting site visits and collateral inspections when necessary.
  • Performing risk ratings in accordance with MoneyMax’s established loan policies.
  • Maintain portfolio quality through the receipt of payments and deposits, charge-offs, and recovery activities necessary to minimize losses.
  • Maintain borrowers’ loan and financial information for:
  • Impact tracking.
  • Compliance purposes.
  • MoneyMax reports and ratios.
  • Loan file audits and reviews by internal or external staff.
  • Recommend improvements to lending policies.
  • Report on portfolio performance to the Management Board.
  • Attend Loan Committee meetings when required.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with relevant MoneyMax stakeholders, banks, credit unions, tribal organizations, federal government agencies, foundations, community partners, and public and private organizations.
  • Meet regularly with the Loan Officer Supervisor and prepare requested reports.
  • Attend meetings, training sessions, seminars and conferences considered necessary to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Perform other job-related duties assigned by the Loan Officer Supervisor.

Signatory authority

The Loan Officer will be authorized to initiate and sign credit memoranda for loans.

Access to sensitive areas

The position will have access to:

  • Loan files.
  • MoneyMax storage facilities for filing purposes.
  • Electronic platforms required to perform assigned duties.

Minimum qualifications

Candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accountancy, Microfinance or Business Administration is preferred.
  • Between one and three years of experience in business, finance, banking or lending, demonstrating a strong record of relationship development and management.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare financial reports, performance reports and executive summaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computers, Microsoft Office applications and financial software.
  • Willingness to undergo a background check, including a credit report check.
  • Willingness to provide a police clearance certificate.

Preferred qualifications and competencies

Preferred candidates should have:

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with tribal, federal, state, regional and local agencies or organizations, community leaders, and the general public.
  • Exemplary customer service skills.
