Position Overview:

The Literacy Facilitator is responsible for supporting Subject Advisors to adopt effective and innovative coaching approaches that strengthen Grade 1 and Grade 2 teachers’ capacity to deliver high-quality literacy instruction. The role focuses on improving teachers’ application of literacy teaching and learning methodologies so that children develop strong foundational reading skills and a sustained habit of reading.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Program Implementation, Training, and Monitoring

• Serves as the technical resource to subject advisors in applying literacy skills and the habit of reading techniques in the classroom or library.
• Through the Program Officer, Literacy Field, coordinates closely with the Instructional Design and Teacher Support Unit to ensure they are successfully implementing the program design and able to provide feedback on how well it works.
• Regularly observes, demonstrates and coaches the subject advisors who will coach teachers on delivering the instructional component of the Literacy Program.
• Regularly observes, demonstrates and coaches all subject advisors for primary grade teachers and librarians in the implementation of the library period and reading activities.
• Coordinate with the Subject Advisors in conducting the Grade 1 and 2 scheduled assessments for tracking learners’ reading and writing progress.
• Support the Subject Advisor to conduct and analyze data related to formative student assessments to inform support for Grade 1 and 2 teachers.
• Regularly provides technical support to the Subject Advisor on progress and coaches him/her on ways to support teachers and ensures longer term sustainability of literacy outcomes within the school.
• Attends and participates in teacher and librarian training related to the Literacy program.
• Participate in literacy events, parent meetings, and other community activities.
• Participate in regular review meetings and any other activities which may be required to be undertaken to fulfill the objectives of the organization.
• Supports donor visits through demonstration projects and presentations, as needed.
• Participate with the Subject to Collect the parents/guardians’ mobile numbers from his/her cluster or schools.
• Composition and share weekly text messages with different themes to parents/guardians and any other related stakeholders.
• Collection of various related data required for the implementation of the program from allocated schools.
• Timely setting of annual performance goals and sharing with the supervisor for 1 on 1 meetings.

Planning, Reporting and Documentation

• Conducts ongoing planning, documentation, and reporting of school visits in a timely manner.
• Collection of success stories, best practices and lessons learned and shared with the Program Officer, Literacy Field.

Qualifications:

Required:

• University degree in Education, preferably with a major in Language/Linguistics.
• 2-3 years of related work experience.
• Proficient user of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), internet and related applications.
• Good command of English and Kiswahili (both written and oral).

Preferred:

• Good interpersonal skills and a team player
• Ability to monitor progress of program implementation
• Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people
• Ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously and take initiative
• Desire and ability to spend 90% of time traveling and visiting school sites to provide coaching and monitor progress of program implementation.
• Experience working with young children
• Experience working with schools and teachers
• Experience with reading, literacy or learning improvement programs
