LABORATORY ASSISTANT
Job Summary
The Laboratory Assistant will support laboratory operations by assisting with specimen handling, preparation, equipment maintenance, documentation, and general laboratory activities under the direction of qualified laboratory professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, label, and properly handle patient specimens.
- Assist with specimen collection and preparation as directed.
- Ensure specimens are properly identified and handled according to laboratory procedures.
- Prepare laboratory materials, reagents, and work areas.
- Assist laboratory professionals during routine testing.
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation of laboratory work areas.
- Clean and maintain laboratory equipment as instructed.
- Monitor laboratory supplies and report shortages.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation.
- Follow infection-prevention, biosafety, and waste-disposal procedures.
- Handle biological materials safely and responsibly.
- Report equipment faults, specimen issues, or other concerns to the relevant supervisor.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
Qualifications & Experience
- Certificate or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Laboratory Technology, or a related field, depending on the scope of duties.
- Relevant professional registration/licensing where applicable.
- Previous laboratory experience is an advantage.
- Good attention to detail and ability to follow procedures accurately.
- Strong hygiene, safety, and organisational awareness.
- Ability to work effectively within a laboratory team.
