Background

A to Z Arusha refers to the A to Z Textile Mills Limited, a major manufacturing company headquartered in Arusha, Tanzania. Established by the Shah family in 1966 as a small garment manufacturer, it has grown into one of the largest vertically integrated manufacturing plants in East Africa, employing thousands of Tanzanians. While the company produces various textile and plastic products, including garments (like T-shirts and polo shirts) and household plastic items, its primary and most famous product is the Long-Lasting Insecticidal Net (LLIN), a vital tool in combating malaria across Africa.

The core business of A to Z is centered on the production and distribution of these high-quality, World Health Organization (WHO) approved insecticidal bed nets. The company became the sole African producer of the Olyset net in 2003, partnering with the Japanese multinational Sumitomo Chemical for a joint venture. This focus on public health and large-scale manufacturing has made it a significant supplier to global aid and development agencies such as UNICEF, The Global Fund, and the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI). Its vertical integration includes spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing, finishing, and cutting departments, allowing it to control the entire production process and maintain competitiveness.

Beyond its massive production capacity, A to Z Textile Mills is recognized for its significant social and economic contribution to Arusha and Tanzania. It is one of the largest private sector employers in the country, with a majority of its workforce being women.
