HakiElimu is an independent civil society organization dedicated to human rights and education. The organization, founded in 2001, works to transform education by influencing policy, stimulating public dialogue, conducting research, and collaborating with partners. Their vision is an open, just, and democratic Tanzania where everyone has the right to an education that promotes equity, creativity, and critical thinking. HakiElimu is seeking its fourth executive director to build on past achievements and bring new energy to the organization’s work.
Overall Responsibility
The Executive Director (ED) is the leader of the organization and is responsible for providing strategic leadership, guiding staff, and ensuring that HakiElimu’s systems and practices are effective, transparent, and accountable. The ED engages with external actors to further the organization’s objectives6. A critical part of the role is fundraising by cultivating relationships with key global and regional partners. The ED’s authority comes from their trustworthy character, integrity, and credibility with civil society, government, and funder communities.
Key Responsibilities
- National and International Influence and Advocacy: The ED strengthens the vision of critical and creative education in a democratic society and inspires citizen participation and government reforms through representation at national, regional, and global platforms. This role involves building relationships and coalitions with national and international leaders to amplify citizen-centered reforms and using various media platforms to raise HakiElimu’s profile.
- Strategic Development: The ED leads the development of new strategies, oversees their successful implementation, and guides the organization through challenging external contexts. A key focus is on achieving strategic outcomes that make a meaningful difference at scale in the lives of children, women, and men. The ED is also responsible for developing strong funding partnerships that support the organization’s long-term mission and independence.
- Leadership and Organizational Culture: The ED works closely with the Board to ensure effective governance and oversight. They are also responsible for cultivating a culture of listening, humility, and shared decision-making with the Senior Management Team and all staff. The ED should model a participatory leadership style that encourages an impact-driven mindset, innovation, and accountability.
Experience & Qualifications
The ideal candidate is a Tanzanian with at least ten years’ experience leading initiatives that involve the government, civil society organizations, and citizens. A master’s degree is strongly preferred, but exceptional candidates with a bachelor’s degree will be considered. The candidate should have a track record of engaging with high-level civil society and government leaders, and demonstrated experience securing funding and forging alliances to advance strategic goals. The role requires excellent communication skills in both Swahili and English.
