CRANE OPERATOR

Reports To: Construction Manager
Duty Station: Nyanzaga Site, Sengerema District

Job Overview

We are seeking experienced and safety-focused Crane Operators to support site construction operations. The successful candidates will safely operate mobile cranes and support the lifting, movement, and positioning of heavy machinery, structural steel, and construction materials.

Key Responsibilities

Crane Operation

  • Safely operate mobile cranes to lift, move, and position heavy equipment and construction materials.
  • Follow crane capacity charts and approved lifting procedures.
  • Ensure safe and controlled lifting operations at all times.

Pre-Operational Inspections

  • Conduct mandatory daily crane inspections before operation.
  • Check rigging equipment, wire ropes, hydraulic systems, and safety devices.
  • Report defects or unsafe conditions immediately.

Site Preparation

  • Inspect lifting routes and work areas.
  • Verify ground conditions before crane setup.
  • Properly deploy outriggers and mats where required.
  • Ensure load requirements are within the crane's rated capacity.

Communication & Coordination

  • Work closely with riggers, dogmen, and site supervisors.
  • Follow approved hand signals and two-way radio communication protocols.
  • Maintain clear communication throughout lifting operations.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow site safety procedures and company protocols.
  • Comply with applicable OSHA/local regulatory requirements.
  • Stop operations where unsafe conditions are identified.

Maintenance & Reporting

  • Maintain daily operational logs.
  • Report mechanical faults and maintenance requirements promptly to the Fleet Manager.

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of rigging principles and safe lifting practices.
  • Knowledge of load calculations and relevant software.
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure site conditions.

 

  • Cut, bevel, align, and clamp pipe sections and fittings into position.
  • Use power tools, flame cutters, and pipe-fitting equipment safely and effectively.
  • Prepare piping components for welding and installation.
  • Perform high-quality, defect-free multi-pass welds in various positions.
  • Weld carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy, or copper piping systems as required.
  • Follow approved welding procedures and specifications.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings and blueprints.
  • Interpret Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Work in accordance with Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  • Inspect completed welds for defects such as: Cracks, Porosity, Undercut, Lack of penetration.
  • Assist with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), including radiography/X-ray and hydrostatic testing.
  • Set up, calibrate, and maintain welding machines and equipment.
  • Maintain torches, regulators, shielding gas supplies, and safety equipment.
  • Follow site safety requirements and applicable OSHA regulations.
  • Comply with relevant industry codes and project procedures.
  • Maintain a safe working environment at all times.
  • Certified in GTAW / TIG, SMAW / Stick, or GMAW / MIG welding processes.
  • Capable of passing site-specific bend tests and 100% X-ray testing.
  • Proficiency in hand and power tools, including angle grinders, plasma cutters, pipe beveling equipment, and oxy-fuel torches.
  • Strong measurement and layout skills.
  • Ability to use calipers, micrometers, framing squares, and pipe alignment clamps.
  • Ability to work to tight tolerances.
  • Certified in at least one of the following welding processes: GTAW / TIG, SMAW / Stick, GMAW / MIG.
  • At least 3 years of professional pipe welding experience.
  • Experience in industrial, construction, manufacturing, refinery, or similar environments.
