Responsibilities
This role is the North Mara Geotechnical discipline lead and is responsible for leading the site-based team (with consultants where needed) to deliver Geotechnical planning and design inputs, and for protecting the plan from Geotechnical Hazards. In this capacity, the following activities are required.
- Providing geotechnical input into the open pit and underground mining & mine planning process.
- Maintain the mine’s Ground Control Management Plan, TARPS, Ground Support Standard etc.
- Manage the geotechnical budget and headcount in collaboration with the regional Geotechnical Manager. Procurement of equipment as needed in collaboration with the regional Geotechnical Manager.
- Commissioning of consultant work as needed in collaboration with the regional Geotechnical Manager.
- Lead the Geotechnical Team, and collaborate with all other teams on site to implement the Ground Control Management Plan in line with the Barrick Geotechnical Standard through activities such as:
- Geotechnical stope designs.
- Geotechnical slope designs.
- Geotechnical Hazard management in open pits and underground.
- Design of stope and development support e.g. primary support & cable bolt layouts.
- Design, installation, evaluation & analysis of underground and open pit stability monitoring systems.
- Maintaining systems to validate design assumptions, and track compliance of actual excavations to design.
- Maintaining a 3D Geotechnical block model (mining rock mass model for open pit and underground) for stope stability and ground support evaluations.
- Maintaining a Life of Mine stress model and utilizing the model for stope sequencing, evaluation of seismic risk & recommendations to mitigate geotechnical risks that might arise during the LOM.
- Raise bore stability analysis.
- Pillar design & analysis.
- Backfill exposure stability analysis.
- Rock mass & structural logging data analysis & validation.
- Ground support project costing, budgeting & management of change.
- Hydrogeological work – design and monitoring of hydrogeological systems & analysis of technical reports.
- Training of Geotechnical Engineers.
- Collecting, analyzing and interpreting geotechnical data.
- Collaborating with the open pit and underground mining managers to the production team adheres to the approved mine ground support standards.
- Ensuring ground control audits and quality assurance programs are carried out regularly and documented.
- Reviewing standard ground support profiles.
- Maintaining adequate stocks of ground support consumables on site.
- Providing monthly consumption reports on ground support installed.
- Carrying out ground control training programmes are carried out where required.
- Managing ground support trials and making recommendations on their performance (pull testing of installed ground supports).
- Inspection and reporting of significant ground falls.
- Managing ground control matters and generating relevant/specific ground control designs.
- Weekly and end of monthly Geotechnical reports.
- Promote health and safety in the workplace.
- Compliance with all statutory regulations and procedures.
- Compliance with all the Company’s Policies and Procedures.
- Establish and meet project timelines.
- Escalation of risks and matters requiring support to management for action.
- Responsible for design approval, site inspection, monitoring, interpreting, evaluating, maintaining, and reporting.
- Ensure pit designs are supported with quality and adequate geological and geotechnical data.
- Perform return stability analysis (kinematic, Limiting Equilibrium, and numerical) to proactively identify potential instabilities and recommend measures to prevent/manage such inabilities from occurring in collaboration with other teams on site. .
Qualification requirements
Bachelor’s degree of Science or Engineering with a major in Geotechnical Engineering, or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering or Geology with a Masters in Geotechnical Engineering.
Preference will be given to candidates with qualifications in Leadership and Business Management.
Experience and competencies needed.
- At least 5 years’ experience in leadership role on a mine site (Snr Engineer and above)
- A minimum of 5+ years of experience in underground mining operations
- A minimum of 5+ years of experience in open pit mining operations.
- Good understanding of mining processes.
- Knowledge of underground & open pit mining as well as interaction problems between OP and UG.
- Working knowledge of geotechnical software such as Map3D, Phase2, Dips, Slide3, UnWedge, RocData, GEM4D.
- Working with geotechnical knowledge of mine design software.
- Excellent communication & interpersonal skills.
- Sound judgment and analytical skills.
- Ability to lead and implement changes and improvements.
