Role purpose
The Specialist: Packet Core & Telco Infrastructure will maintain Telco Infrastructure and Packet Core operational activities by controlling, managing, and supporting day-to-day operations.
The role aims to:
- Ensure the highest possible network uptime.
- Achieve established key performance indicator (KPI) targets.
- Promote operational excellence.
- Improve the efficiency of operational processes and costs.
- Ensure an end-to-end quality experience for users.
Key responsibilities
Cloud infrastructure
- Manage and monitor infrastructure resources.
- Create, onboard, and manage the lifecycle of virtual network functions (VNFs), virtual machines (VMs), and virtual network function components (VNFCs).
- Collaborate with application owners to resolve issues related to infrastructure and/or the hypervisor.
IP design and optimization
- Design and implement IP networks that cater to current and future demand, with network availability at the heart of the design.
- Monitor and optimize IP networks to ensure that optimal paths are always preferred.
- Manage end-to-end connectivity for corporate customers.
Packet Core operations
- Control and manage the operation of the Packet Core network domain to deliver end-to-end network availability and meet KPI targets.
- Ensure preventive, reactive, and corrective maintenance is completed as required.
- Ensure regular updates are performed according to vendor recommendations.
- Maintain and emphasize system security across the Packet Core and its network domain.
Packet Core planning and organization
- Participate in developing the evolution and roadmap of the Packet Core network environment and its associated network elements.
- Advise the business on optimal and up-to-date solutions that will help make Vodacom the market leader.
Incident management
- Provide support for incident management activities, including:
Business continuity and disaster recovery
- Ensure that all business continuity management (BCM) and disaster recovery plans (DRPs) are in place.
- Ensure BCM and DRP arrangements comply with Vodacom policy.
Qualifications
- A university degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electronics Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or an equivalent field.
- At least two years of experience in telecommunications operations.
- Certifications in IP-related fields, such as CCNA, JNCA, or HCIA, are an added advantage.
Knowledge and experience
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Knowledge of mobile telecommunications and GSM network architectures and technologies.
- An understanding of cloud infrastructure architecture.
- Proven knowledge of Unix/Linux.
- Knowledge of programming languages such as C, C++, and Python.
- Experience working with multiple suppliers, vendors, and partners.

- Planning and organizing skills
