Background

Temeke Municipal Council, in collaboration with Sense International Tanzania (SIT), invites applications from qualified, competent, and motivated Tanzanians to fill four (4) Physiotherapist positions. The successful candidates will support the implementation of Sensory Screening and Early Intervention Services in selected primary healthcare facilities within Temeke Municipality, Dar es Salaam. This initiative aims to strengthen early identification, referral, rehabilitation, and intervention services for children with sensory impairments and developmental challenges.

The organization is part of Sense International, a UK-registered charity dedicated to supporting people with deafblindness and multiple disabilities in resource-limited settings.   • Livelihood Improvement for Persons with Deafblindness and Multiple Sensory Impairments

Through its partnership with Temeke Municipal Council, the organization seeks to improve access to quality rehabilitation and support services for children with disabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Sensory Screening

The Physiotherapist will:

  • Coordinate sensory screening activities conducted by nurses and Community Health Workers (CHWs).
  • Support first-stage risk factor screening and second-stage hearing and vision assessments.
  • Compile and submit screening reports to health facility management and relevant authorities.

2. Early Intervention Services

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting functional assessments to determine eligibility for Early Intervention services.
  • Facilitating referrals for specialized services where necessary.
  • Providing rehabilitation services, including sensory stimulation, following approved Early Intervention Protocols, curricula, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Advising on assistive devices, developmental toys, and learning materials.
  • Training and supporting parents and caregivers on early stimulation techniques and daily living skills.
  • Developing and implementing Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for enrolled children.
  • Conducting regular home visits (at least quarterly) to promote inclusive care and accessibility.
  • Providing counselling services to children and their families.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including medical practitioners, social workers, physiotherapists, CHWs, and other stakeholders.
  • Supporting the transition of children from Early Intervention programmes to pre-primary and primary education.

3. Early Intervention Unit Management

The successful candidate will:

  • Coordinate daily operations of the Early Intervention Unit.
  • Manage requisition, utilization, and accountability of therapy and office equipment.
  • Maintain an up-to-date asset register.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and functionality of screening and therapy equipment.
  • Manage patient records and data while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Prepare and submit weekly and monthly reports to facility management, Temeke Municipal Council, Sense International Tanzania, and other relevant authorities.

4. Community Awareness and Outreach

Duties include:

  • Coordinating community sensitization programmes.
  • Supporting awareness campaigns and outreach screening activities in collaboration with health facility management.

5. Other Responsibilities

  • Perform any duties assigned by supervisors.
  • Adhere to professional ethics and codes of conduct.
  • Comply with safeguarding, confidentiality, and data protection policies.
  • Report any issues that may affect service delivery or the reputation of the Government of Tanzania and its partners.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must possess:

  • A Diploma in Physiotherapy from a recognized institution.
  • Registration with the relevant professional board (where applicable).
  • Experience working with children, especially those with disabilities or sensory impairments, which will be an added advantage.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in both community and healthcare facility settings.

Remuneration

Successful candidates will receive:

  • A gross monthly allowance of TZS 800,000 to cover transport and meal expenses.
  • Statutory deductions, including PAYE, in accordance with Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) regulations.
  • Monthly payments subject to submission and approval of timesheets.
