Role Overview & Key Responsibilities

The Internal Controls Specialist oversees IEA Tanzania’s operational risk profile, internal control frameworks, and ethics and compliance programs. Reporting directly to the Country Director, the role protects the business from operational risks, ensures strict regulatory and legal compliance, and drives risk awareness across all departments.

Internal Control Framework & Governance:

Operationalize the global INCOME control framework, define the country risk governance structure, and lead internal control self-assessments.

Ethics & Compliance Oversight:

Implement ethics programs, oversee fraud and tamper field investigations, and support HR on compliance issues, separations, and disciplinary actions in line with local labor laws.

Enterprise Risk Management:

Maintain the Country Risk Register, validate gross/residual risks, challenge first-line risk assessments, and prepare for the Fortnightly Ethics and Quarterly Risk Committees.

Stakeholder Engagement & Training:

Deliver risk awareness, fraud prevention, and integrity training across teams while serving as a strategic partner to external legal, risk, and regulatory stakeholders.

Reporting & Escalation:

Conduct root-cause analysis for Material Risk Events (MREs), ensure accurate operational loss reporting, and monitor field commission expenditures.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Audit, Compliance, Development Finance, or a related discipline. A Master’s degree in Business or a Social Field is an added advantage.

Experience:

Minimum 7 years of total management experience, including at least 2 years working directly with senior leadership and external risk stakeholders.

Technical Skills:

Deep expertise in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), process modeling, risk analysis, regulatory systems navigation, and internal control tool administration.

Soft Skills:

Strategic vision, high-level reporting/presentation capabilities, and a commitment to embedding ethical conduct throughout the organization.
