ETP Operator – Zanzibar

Reports To: Plant Engineer / Maintenance Supervisor

Job Purpose:

To operate, monitor, and maintain the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) to ensure all wastewater is treated to meet or exceed Zanzibar environmental standards and regulatory requirements before safe discharge.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and monitor all ETP processes (screening, equalization, aeration, clarification, sludge handling) according to SOPs.
  • Conduct routine laboratory tests (pH, COD, BOD, TSS) to analyze effluent quality.
  • Adjust chemical dosing and process parameters to maintain optimal treatment efficiency.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on ETP equipment (pumps, blowers, clarifiers).
  • Maintain accurate daily logs of plant operations, test results, and chemical usage.
  • Coordinate with production to manage effluent inflow and prevent shock loads.
  • Ensure compliance with all Zanzibar Environmental Management Committee (ZEMC) regulations.
  • Manage sludge dewatering and safe disposal procedures.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Diploma in Chemical/Environmental/Process Engineering or Water Technology.
  • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience operating an industrial ETP.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment chemistry and microbiology.

Required Skills & Competencies:

  • Technical aptitude and mechanical skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow strict procedures.
  • Basic analytical skills for interpreting lab results.
  • Safety-conscious and environmentally aware.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
