Background

World Health Organization is the United Nations specialized agency responsible for directing and coordinating international health efforts. Since its establishment in 1948, WHO has worked with governments and partners to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve vulnerable populations, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to attain the highest possible standard of health.

In Tanzania, WHO works closely with the Government and health sector partners to strengthen national health systems, improve emergency preparedness and response, and promote evidence-based decision-making. High-quality data and timely information are essential to monitoring public health risks, assessing emergency situations, and guiding effective interventions. WHO is therefore strengthening its information management and monitoring systems to support health emergency operations, surveillance, and performance monitoring across the country.

The Data Management Officer will be based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and will support WHO’s data management, monitoring and evaluation (M&E), and health information management activities. The role focuses on collecting, analysing, managing, and disseminating high-quality health information to support evidence-based decision-making, emergency preparedness, and health programme implementation. Key Responsibilities

1. Data Collection, Analysis & Information Management

• Support the collection, analysis, production, and dissemination of health data and information.
• Aggregate and maintain information from WHO and partner organizations, including health indicators, emergency response data, performance monitoring information, and contact databases.
• Ensure data quality, completeness, accuracy, and timely reporting.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of information management systems and databases.

2. Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting

• Support monitoring and evaluation activities to measure programme performance and health emergency indicators.
• Develop analytical reports, dashboards, situation reports (SitReps), and other information products.
• Monitor progress against key performance indicators and support evidence-based programme management.
• Contribute to quality assurance processes for health information and reporting systems.

3. Geographic Information & Data Visualization

• Participate in basic geographic analysis for maps and spatial information products.
• Support the preparation of dashboards, maps, and visualizations that facilitate decision-making.
• Develop user-friendly data visualization products to communicate programme performance and emergency information effectively.

Profile Required

Experience

Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience, including:

• Information management and data analysis.
• Monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
• Statistics and health information systems.
• Design, management, and analysis of databases and information systems.
• Computer-based applications and web-based information management tools.
• Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, data visualization, and database management.
• Experience with health programmes, emergency response, or the United Nations system is an advantage.
• Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and/or international work environment.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Data management, computer sciences, statistics, applied math, public health, or a related field.

Languages

• Fluent English
• Knowledge of Swahili is desirable.
