Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML or Geita mine), one of AngloGold Ashanti’s flagship mines, is located in North-Western Tanzania in the Lake Victoria goldfields in Geita region, about 120km from Mwanza City and 4km west of the township of Geita. It has been in operation as a large-scale mine since 2000 but mining has taken place in the area since the 1930s. The Geita gold deposit is currently mined as a multiple open-pit and underground operation.

As at 31 December 2020, the Mineral Resource is at 7.92 million ounces. Approximately 1,555m of capital development was completed for the Star & Comet, Nyankanga and Geita hill underground sections, to access new areas for stope mining and for further exploration in 2021.

Open-pit mining at Nyankanga and Geita Hill continued with Geita Hill reaching the end of its economic life and Nyankanga completed in September 2020. In April 2021, GGML started open pit mining activities at Nyamulilima (2.4km from Star & Comet) with expectations of producing one million ounces in the next six years.

Geita mine is currently powered by a 40MW power plant comprising of four diesel generators. The power plant was commissioned in August 2018, providing reliable power supply to the mining operations. In 2020, the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO) initiated plans to supply electricity from the national grid network to the mine. The mine will be connected from 220/33kV located at Mpomvu village, six kilometres from the mine. The 33/11kV 60MVA mine substation are currently under implementation stage.

Geita Gold mine has been recognised by the Government as Overall Best Performer of the Mining Sector for the 2019/2020 financial year and in 2018, by the Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) as the best employer in the country. In 2019, the Company was the first runner up.

In Tanzania, community development is one of the material issues to which we are committed. Our support at Geita was guided by the community investment procedure.

In July 2017, the Parliament of Tanzania amended the Mining Act 2010, and introduced section 105, which describes the procedure for mineral right holders to prepare and execute their corporate social responsibility (CSR) plans. Geita mine is the first in the country to execute its social and economic projects under the new legislation. Most of these are infrastructure projects.

Malaria

Malaria remains endemic in Geita, the region ranking second in terms of disease burden in Tanzania. Tanzania is among the 10 countries in the world with the highest number of malaria cases and deaths accounting for:

  • 3% of the global cases
  • 13.4% of cases in east and southern Africa
  • 5% of global deaths

The fight against malaria has remained a priority through advocacy, distribution of mosquito repellents, environmental vector controls and distributing mosquito treated bed nets amongst the workforce. As a result, cases of malaria declined 31.2% in 2020 compared to 2019 and the Malaria Frequency Lost Time improved by 35.7%. This is a significant improvement compared to 2018, where we recorded a decrease of malaria by 0.17% among employees and contractors affected by that time.

Under the 2019 corporate social investment plan, the mine funded the roofing of 20 dispensaries, finished construction of 12 dispensaries, and built four new dispensaries at Nyakato, Mgusu, Ibanda and Bihegule.
